Kohl’s Department Stores recently honored two Cumberland County students with $1,000 scholarships for outstanding community service as part of its Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program.
The two were part of 200 students awarded scholarships, and they were chosen from more than 37,000 nominees nationwide.
This year’s recipients were Four Petre, 8, of Carlisle, and Abbie Hamilton, 18, of Mechanicsburg.
Four started Four’s Backpack Project, which collects backpacks full of school supplies for children in need in South Dakota. He collected enough supplies to fill 72 backpacks, as well as donated supplies to teachers at the Cheyenne River Lakota Sioux Indian Reservation in South Dakota.
Hamilton, who is a captain in the Cumberland JROTC, organized various events, including large-scale meal events for soon-to-be departing soldiers, blood drives and various fundraisers to assist wounded soldiers.
Each regional-level winner qualifies for one of the 10 national scholarships, which will be announced at the end of July. National winners will receive a total of $10,000 in scholarships, and Kohl’s will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on each of the national winners’ behalf.
