SaWaFo Double Degree International PhD Fellowships 2014/15

SaWaFo PhD Fellowship opens for application from qualified applicants  for the 2014 fellowships which aim to support  the further education and training of local scholars in research and academic positions. The PhD candidate will be enrolled as a PhD fellow at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology KNUST, Ghana but will also have the possibility of receiving a PhD degree from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark  if requirements regarding double degrees are fulfilled.

PhD supervision will be a joint collaboration between KNUST, the University of Copenhagen and DHI and the PhD fellow will have the opportunity to take PhD level courses at both Universities.

Specifications 

  • KNUST with 2-3 stays at the University of Copenhagen and DHI of approximately 4 months duration each.
  • ·         The PhD fellow will be part of work package 6: Cost-benefits, policy analysis
  • The PhD student will conduct research activities to develop cost benefit analyses on the use of low quality water and identify policy measures put in place by national institutions to minimize its health impacts. The candidate will also assess contextual data sets on risk assessment and management and effective health protection measures.
  • Worth of Awards
    • The PhD candidate will be provided with a stipend USD 6,900 on an annual basis. Approved travel costs, costs for fieldwork, etc., will be reimbursed.
    • The disbursement of scholarship funds will be connected to the successful delivery of research work products (deliverables) to be agreed upon between the project leader and the PhD fellow at the onset of the research work.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Hold an MSc, MPhil, MBA or other equivalent master degree in relevant fields
  • Willingness to work in a team and a strong ambition to accomplish the research goals of the project
  • Creative personality
  • Good academic  results /transcripts
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Good command of English in speaking and writing
  • PhD candidates from non-Anglophone countries are required to submit an internationally recognised Certificate of Proficiency in the English Language (TOEFL or British Council, IELTS);
  • Good collaborative skills and preferably experience with project management
  • Ability to travel to Copenhagen for periods of 3-4 months for PhD course training and supervisory workshops
  • Perspectives on future use of PhD skills in Ghana in particular and Sub-Saharan Africa in general (teaching, research, practice);
  • Full time availability from January 2013 for a period of three years

Priority will be given to Ghanaian/West African Researchers.  Residents from high-income countries are not eligible for consideration.

Responsibilities

  • The PhD fellows’ tasks will be to study and report on their selected research question within the context of this project by methods depending on the area of research.
  • The interconnected sub-studies will require intensive interaction with the program leader, research collaborators and other PhD and MSc students in the program. The progress of the PhD fellows’ work will be evaluated in annual discussions.
  • It is expected that the PhD fellow publish 2-3 papers in international peer reviewed journals.

Selection and Evaluation

  • Please note that all shortlisted candidates must attend a selection interview with an independent review panel which will take place in or near Kumasi, Ghana.
  •  The date of the interview will be communicated after short listing.  The selection interview is mandatory to support the final selection of candidates.
