Fulbright-UCL Award 2013
Fulbright Awards aim to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries, promoting peace and understanding through educational exchange of people, knowledge and skills. The US-UK Fulbright Awards scheme was set up in 1948 to enhance mutual understanding between the US and the UK.
UCL and the Fulbright Commission have agreed to collaborate to offer one Fulbright-UCL Award in each academic session.
Eligibility Requirements
Candidates Must
- Be US citizens not currently resident in the UK;
- Have successfully completed or be currently completing undergraduate studies;
- Be intending to pursue full-time Master’s Degree Studies in any subject at UCL.
Please Note: Awards are made conditional upon acceptance to UCL before arrival in the UK. Students admitted to joint programmes taught at UCL and another university are not eligible for the award.
Value, Terms, and Conditions
- The award includes tuition fees and £13,500 towards maintenance.
- The scholarship is tenable for one year only. In the case of full-time Master’s programmes of more than one year’s duration, the award applies only in the first year.
- The Fulbright-UCL Award may be held alongside other scholarships, studentships, awards, or bursaries, provided the total amount of funds received do not substantially exceed full tuition fees plus living costs.
- Scholarship recipients are obliged to inform the UCL Student Funding Office immediately of any other funding they are awarded toward their UCL Master’s degree studies, before or subsequent to confirmation of the Fulbright-UCL Award.
- Scholarships cannot be transferred to another institution, nor deferred to a later year.
- Payments are made in equal instalments throughout the academic year.
- Award payments are only possible once the recipient is fully enrolled in a Master’s degree programme at UCL.
- Within 2 months of the end date of the Fulbright-UCL Award, recipients are required to submit to UCL a letter of gratitude to the donor/s (To Whom It May Concern). The letter should comment on the impact of the scholarship on the recipient’s education and how the award has benefited them. It should also include details of proposed career plans and any career developments.
- All scholarship and awards are subject to the provisions of the General Regulations for Scholarships, Awards, Bursaries, Prizes and Medals.
Selection Criteria: The award is allocated on academic excellence and potential, but the funders are also looking for the following:
- Rigour in scholarly enquiry and academic or professional excellence;
- Strong reasons for wishing to pursue the proposed project in the UK;
- Interest in the people and cultures of the UK;
- Clear set of objectives for the Fulbright year;
- Commitment to the host community through volunteer and extra-curricular activity.
Application Deadline and Procedure: Application for the award is made through the Fulbright Commission.
- The competition opens in May and applications forms are available from this time.
- The deadline for submitting Scholarship applications is 17 October 2013.
- Between November and February the applications are evaluated and a shortlist is drawn up by late February.
- Shortlisted candidates are invited to a telephone interview. These take place in early March.

Notification of Results
- Scholarships recipients are notified in late March.
Between April and June the scholar paperwork is prepared. In mid-September the scholar arrives in London, orientation takes place and the Fulbright year begins.
