Brandon Research Fellowship at the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law
Guidance Notes for Applicationsfor 2014
Applications are invited for the Brandon Research Fellowship, tenable in the calendar year
2014.
Deadline for Applications: 23rd September 2013
1. Eligibility
(a) Candidates for the Brandon Fellowship must be fluent in English and at least
one of French, German or Spanish.
(b) Candidates must specify a project on some aspect of public or private
international law or international arbitration on which they will work while
resident at the Lauterpacht Centre.
(c) The Fellowship is intended to cover a stay of at least eight (8) weeks at the
Lauterpacht Centre in the year of the award.
(d) This is a Post-Graduate research fellowship. Persons currently enrolled in PhD
programs (in the UK or elsewhere) are not eligible to apply unless their final
thesis has already been submitted by the closing date for applications.
2. Preference
Preference will be given to candidates who are nationals of any of the following:
(a) Members of the European Union;
(b) Members of the Commonwealth;
(c) Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Japan, Panama, Serbia, Switzerland and the
United States of America.
Please ensure that you specify your nationality on the application form.
3. Research Project
The Brandon Fellow must undertake a project on some aspect of public or private
international law or international arbitration while resident at the Lauterpacht Centre.
Candidates must specify a project in their application.
Fellows must produce a report of their work in English at the end of their Fellowship
and deposit with the Lauterpacht Centre any publication resulting from the work
undertaken during the Fellowship.
4. Award
The Fellowship will be to a maximum value of £3,000 (GBP); any additional travel or
other expenses incurred will be the responsibility of the Fellow. Payment of the award
will be made after arrival in Cambridge. Please see the attached schedule of fees for an
indication as to whether you will need to provide additional funds from your own

5. Applications
Applications for the Brandon Fellowship should consist of:
(a) Completed application form including outline of proposed research (available
on the Lauterpacht Centre website: www.lcil.cam.ac.uk);
(b) Curriculum vitae (maximum four pages);
(c) Two letters of reference.
All documents should be prepared in English. The Applicant must ensure that his/her
application is delivered either by post or email by the application deadline. The
Applicant is also responsible for ensuring that the letters of reference are received by
the application deadline.

6. Facilities
The Lauterpacht Centre provides all Visiting Scholars, including the Brandon Fellow,
with computer access, bench space, access to the Centre’s library and an introduction
to the University Library and Squire Law Library. The costs of provision of these
facilities are covered by bench fees. If additional (i.e. computer or secretarial) support
is required, this may be subject to an additional charge.
7. Involvement in the Centre’s activities
Visitors to the Centre are encouraged to attend Friday lunchtime lectures in term, as
well as any of the Centre’s open seminars that may interest them. By arrangement they
may also attend lectures and talks on international law and related subjects elsewhere
in the University. However, the Faculty of Law does reserve the right to levy charges
for attendance at courses run by the Faculty.
The Centre is not a teaching institution, and does not award diplomas or certificates.
