Maxis Bhd recently presented the Maxis Scholarship for Excellence Awards (MSEA), worth a total of RM5.68 million, to outstanding young Malaysian students as part of its on-going commitment towards education, talent and leadership development.
The recipients, 22 undergraduates and five post-graduates, will now go on to pursue courses in their chosen fields at top universities, both locally and abroad. The MSEA were presented to the recipients by Maxis chairman, Raja Tan Sri Arshad Raja Tun Uda, witnessed by their families, Maxis’ chief executive officer Sandip Das, members of Maxis’ senior leadership team, members of MSEA selection panel and university representatives.
The MSEA recipients were selected by a panel of distinguished judges.
Raja Arshad said: “The MSEA underscores Maxis’s commitment to education and ultimately nation building. Contributing towards building the nation’s talent pool is one area that is close to our heart. Our scholarships, aimed at our employees’ and customers’ children are designed to provide talented and outstanding young Malaysians with the opportunity to realise their fullest potential. We are proud to take an active role in addressing Malaysia’s long term strategic issues affecting our progress as a society.”
Through the scholarship, several recipients have gained admission to prestigious universities in Malaysia and other parts of the world to pursue various fields of their choice.
One of the five post-graduate recipients, William Nee, represented his fellow post-graduate MSEA scholarship recipients and gave a speech at the event. “The scholarship has relieved my financial pressure of continuing my studies at the London School of Economics (LSE) and allows me to fully concentrate on my education,” he said. Nee is currently pursuing his MSc in Law and Accounting at the LSE and aspires to become a judge.
Another undergraduate recipient, Razin Rozman, said: “Being awarded this scholarship marks a great step in our journey towards realising our dreams and aspirations. This is our chance to grab the opportunities that are finally within reach, make the best of them.”
Razin is a BSc in Business Management undergraduate at King’s College in the United Kingdom.
The Maxis MSEA was initiated in 2005, in an effort to nurture a forward-thinking and progressive new generation of Malaysians. It is open to young and outstanding Malaysians who have gained admittance to top universities, both locally and abroad. To date, Maxis has committed more than RM37.9 million in scholarships to a total of 209 recipients.
This year, as part of its initiatives to support the needs of the community, Maxis introduced two new community programmes: the Maxis Caregivers’ Appreciation programme, which celebrates the ‘unsung heroes’ of charity homes for their dedication and hard work; and a home adoption programme. Under the home adoption programme, Maxis has pledged its support to two charity homes, namely the Independent Living & Training Centre (ILTC), a centre for people with disabilities run by people with disabilities, and the Jenjarom Old Folks Home. Maxis will provide cash contributions and organise engagement activities and relevant training for a year.
