Nigerians Get Cuban Scholarships to Study Medicine
Four Nigerian students were yesterday presented with different documents to be presented at the Harvana University in Cuba to study medicine having succeeded in getting the country’s scholarships for the 2012/2013 academic session.
The four students are Olaoye Aisha from Osun State, Sombo Jessica from Benue, Adie Patrick from Cross River and Kabiru Muhammad Sagir from Bauchi State.
Speaking in Abuja during the departure reception organised for the students by the Cuban Embassy in Nigeria yesterday, Cuban Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Hugo R.R Milanes, said his country was happy to offer the scholarships as part of the bilateral agreement between both countries hoping to increase the number in the nearest future.
“The programme has been on for many years which we stopped for few years as a result of economic crisis facing my country which also accounted for the few scholarships being given out but we are happy to be back with it. Presently we have more than 150 Nigerians who have graduated from Cuba in different professions out of which 100 of them studied medicine,” Milanes said.
Speaking on criteria for the selection, he said his country first considered academic performance, gender equality by giving women equal opportunity to benefit from the scholarship as well as equal representation of regions in the country considering the multi-cultural and tribal nature of Nigeria.
He urged the beneficiaries to get ready for the task ahead of them by paying back the efforts of their parents, the country and even their host country through hard work and excellence performance at the end of their six year study.
Also speaking at the reception is a Deputy Director at Federal Scholarships Board, Dr. Nwadei Chioma, who disclosed other criteria in selecting them to include, five distinctions in Mathematics and English as well as other three subjects relevant to their course, must be below 23 years of age, result must be less than three years and must pass examination conducted by the board.
