Five pre-tertiary students, who participated in the essay writing competition of MTN Ghana Foundation’s 10 Million Merit Award Scheme, have each received a scholarship package worth GH¢10,000.00 to enable them further their education in courses of their choice.
The beneficiaries were Ishak Ngmenensoa of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Doreen Adjeiwaa Kakari of the University for Development Studies, Shawn Martey of the Cape Coast University, Sandra Obimpeh Quayson of the University of Ghana and John Afrifa Brobbey of the University of Mines and Technology.

The Merit Award Scheme forms part of the package to acknowledge subscribers for their loyalty to the MTN brand, following MTN’s 10 millionth subscriber milestone attained in 2011.
The Award Scheme was launched in May 2012 offering a scholarship package totalling GH¢ 100,000.00 to 10 brilliant but needy students who had applied to 10 pre-selected public tertiary institutions nationwide.
Participants wrote an essay on the topic “How to manage refuse in Ghana while motivating citizens to keep their environment clean.”
Submission of entries spanned a three week period between the 8th and 29th of June, 2012 while a total of four hundred and seventy-two (472) entries were received, twenty-two (22) of which were rejected because they did not meet the entry requirements of the competition.
After reviewing all entries, the best 48 participants were invited for a sit-in examination and interviews to enable the judges select the final 5 winners.
Presenting the awards at a ceremony in Accra, yesterday, the chief executive officer of MTN, Mr. Michael Ikpoki, said MTN was committed to supporting education for continued socio-economic enhancement in Ghana.

Mr Ikpokin gave the assurance that MTN would continue to provide relevant and innovative products and social interventions that would enrich the lives of Ghanaians socially and economically.
He called on the beneficiaries to put the awards into good use, not only for their own good, but also as motivation for assisting more students who deserved such financial support.
In a welcome address, the Corporate Service Executive, Mrs. Cynthia Lumor, said MTN was committed to the promotion of academic excellence.
Mrs Lumor said MTN believed in contributing in human capital and that the nigeriascholarshipsonline.com/”target=”_self”rel=”external”title=”" >scholarships were offered to needy but brilliant students to the tertiary level of education.
She commended the students for going through a vigorous journey through the essay writing and expressed the hope that the offer would help transform lives.
MTN Foundation is the vehicle used by MTN Ghana to undertake corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives in support of communities around the country.
Since its establishment in 2007, the MTN Ghana Foundation has invested about seven million Ghana cedis into community development projects including education.
As one of the focus areas of MTN’s CSR activities, MTN Foundation has invested in education in Ghana by putting up school blocks for about 13 communities while 10 ICT Centres are being set up in all 10 regions of Ghana, three of which have already been commissioned and are in use.
MTN Foundation has also implemented some health projects, among which are support to the Korle-Bu Maternity Block, the Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital and the provision of medical equipment to Kotokuom, Shama, Atebie and KNUST Government hospitals.
